There is much misunderstanding and misinformation about the rejuvenative surgical procedure called "Facelift" or "Rhytidectomy". An appropriately performed facelift rejuvenates the aged area of the face from the level of the eyes to the lower border of the lower jaw (including jowls) and in front of the ears to the nose and corners of the mouth. A facelift does not rejuvenate the corners of the mouth. A facelift does not rejuvenate the upper eyelids, eyebrows or forehead (accomplished by an endoscopic browlift). A facelift does not rejuvenate the center of the neck (accomplished by a cervicoplasty or necklift). Total facial rejuvenation usually requires a browlift, a facelift and a necklift. A successful facelift should look natural. Please call us for a consultation if you are considering getting a facelift in Huntersville, North Carolina.
Why a facelift?
Your face is the first thing people see. It is also the first thing to show your age. As you get older and your skin loses its elasticity, it begins to sag. Factors that can contribute to an appearance that makes you look older than you feel, include spending a significant amount of time in the sun without proper protection and genetics. The effects of aging can be reversed and a facelift is one of the procedures that can help. Dr. Haigney of Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery is highly trained in facelift procedures, as well as brow lifts, neck lifts, oral surgery procedures, and reconstructive surgeries.
What does a facelift fix?
A common misconception is that a facelift takes care of your entire face, including the forehead and neck. However, a facelift, also called a rhytidectomy, deals with the middle portion of the face. It is meant to rejuvenate the area from the eyes down to the lower jaw, including the jowls. It also takes care of the area from the front of the ears to the nose and the corners of the mouth.
What can’t a facelift fix?
While a facelift can help with many things, it cannot rejuvenate:
In order to achieve full facial rejuvenation, you may need to have other procedures done, including an endoscopic brow lift and a neck lift as well.
Benefits of a Facelift
A facelift can offer many benefits, including:
A consultation with Dr. Haigney is needed before you can be considered for a facelift procedure. He will go over your medical history as well as your goals for the outcome. He will also examine your face in order to determine what needs to be done. Pictures are taken to see progress.
Dr. Haigney will give you a set of pre-operative instructions. These instructions may include what medications to avoid and any antibiotics you should take. It is also important to note that if you are a smoker, you need to quit, or be willing to quit both for a time before and after the procedure.
A facelift is performed as an outpatient surgery, meaning that you will be able to go home when the procedure is finished. After you receive anesthesia, Dr. Haigney will make an incision behind the hairline at the level of the temple, around and behind the ear. Sagging muscles and tissues (SMAS) are tightened by creating a SMAS flap and removing the excess. He drapes the skin appropriately and removes any excess. Any deposits of fat are also taken out. When finished, the incisions are stitched closed.
After your procedure, Dr. Haigney will provide you with aftercare instructions. These will include how to deal with pain and swelling, which are not uncommon, and should be expected. It can take several months for the swelling to completely dissipate, but as it does, you will be able to start seeing the results.
