What areas of my head are considered the maxillofacial region?

Maxillofacial refers to the entire oral cavity including the face between the eyes and the upper teeth, the muscles controlling movement of the lower jaw, and even down into the upper neck.

Common Maxillofacial Procedures

The most common maxillofacial procedures that we perform include:

•  Facial TraumaFacial trauma can occur from numerous incidents, including sports injuries, motor vehicle accidents, accidental falls, interpersonal violence or work related injuries. Types of facial injuries can range from soft tissue injuries or even extremely severe trauma to the bones of the face.
•  Jaw Surgery:Is the correction of misaligned jaws, due to trauma or development.
•  Oral Pathology:We examine sore, lumps, and any unusual growths. Oral Cancer can be a very serious health condition.
•  TMJ:Refers to the joints of your jaw. When the joints are not working in sync with the motion, it can be very uncomfortable. TMJ problems can lead to more serious conditions, early detection and treatment are important.
•  Cleft Lip and Palate Procedures:Known as an orofacial cleft, we can examine, diagnose, and make the necessary procedures to repair this very common congenital disorder of a cleft lip or cleft palate.

Your mouth, and the entire oral region, comprises many tissues, both soft and hard. The soft tissues include the lips, inner cheeks, gums and your tongue. The hard tissues include your teeth and jawbone. Besides the hard and soft tissues, there is also various connective tissues that hold the your oral structures in place, as well as a lot of nerves and blood vessels. We refer to the relationship between your upper and lower teeth along with their with the jaw joints as your occlusion, or bite. To have a healthy functioning oral cavity, all of these systems need to work together in harmony. If some or all of these components do not work together in balance, your oral health then becomes compromised. Once it is compromised, it can cause joint pain, discomfort or even a loss of function. We want to alleviate that. At Lake Norman Oral and Facial Surgery, we can make all of the areas of your mouth work in unison as they should, providing you function and aesthetic.
