Does What You Drink Prior to Oral Surgery Really Matter?

Oral Surgery Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery NC 28078When you undergo a surgery, no matter what it is, there are procedures to follow in order to avoid complications. For major oral procedures, for example, which need local or general anesthesia, you are advised to take light meals or none at all for a certain period prior to the surgery.

We will explain why this is needed. Just be assured, that we are not doing this to make your life difficult. There is a method to the madness so to speak.

Is Eating Light Meals at Midnight allowed?

You may have heard about the advice to stop eating food the midnight of your surgery. That maxim has been around since the 1960s, believe it or not.

The advice is that is no longer applicable. Depending on your anesthesiologist, you can eat or drink liquids about two hours before the surgery if local anesthesia is applied. Like the name suggests, you are awake the whole time, so the risks are minimized.

It is different, however, when general anesthesia is involved. In major cases where you will be rendered unconscious, we will advise you to follow the instructions of the anesthesiologist. If the medication is administered through the IV, your stomach needs to be empty of food and liquid because it may cause aspiration and lead to pneumonia.

It is also strongly recommended that you refrain from drinking alcohol and smoking cigarettes, at least a couple of days before surgery. Alcohol numbs your senses, which means more anesthesia will be used for a pain free oral procedure. Cigarettes, meanwhile, will lead to complications post-surgery like bleeding and infection.

Contact us for more questions, but oral surgeries are very standard and we do not anticipate any problems as long as you follow all the instructions. Finally, brush and floss before the surgery to minimize the presence of bacteria which can infect the open wound.
