Many people struggle to get out of bed in the morning. If it is because you just want five more minutes of sleep, that is okay. If it is because your jaw hurts, you may want to find out more about what is happening. It is possible that you suffer from problems that we can help resolve for you.
How the Jaw Works
The jaw is a bone that is separate from the skull. The lower jaw connects to the skull close to the ears. The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw to the skull. There is one of these joints on both sides of the skull. The muscles at the joint allow you to chew and to speak. The pain many people feel is a result of problems with this joint. It is known as temporomandibular joint disorder or TMJ.
What Happens When You Sleep Pain in the joints or muscles is not a new idea to most people. People talk about how their knee is sore when the weather changes or how they overextended themselves working out in the gym. The muscles around the temporomandibular joint are no different. If they are put under stress, they can become sore.
When you sleep a few things can happen that cause this joint to become sore., The most common problem is a poor sleep position. That can cause the jaw to fall out of line. Over the course of the night it results in sore muscles and that sore jaw feeling when you wake up. The solution is to invest in a better pillow and pay attention to the position you fall asleep in.
Contact our offices to schedule an appointment to learn more about potential reasons behind your sore jaw or for an exam.
