Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a “nose job” and technically called a rhinoplasty, is a surgical procedure done to improve the appearance or function of the nose. From being done for medical reasons to correct birth defects, nose surgery can help patients be more comfortable in their own skin. Nose surgery can correct a wide variety of concerns ranging from a lump on the bridge of the nose to straightening a crooked nose to fixing a droopy or enlarged nasal tip.

Choosing to Get a Nose Job

The term "nose surgery" refers to any procedure that reshapes and/or resizes the nose. Deciding to undergo the knife for cosmetic or medical purposes is a big decision, one that you cannot go back on once the deed is done. That being said, it is important to take your time when deciding whether or not to permanently alter the appearance of your nose.

If you have decided, for whatever reason, that you are going to have rhinoplasty, you should first consult with a surgeon. Lake Norman Oral and Facial Surgery staffs some of the finest facial surgeons in the area. Schedule a consultation to discuss with your surgeon what it is that bothers you about your nose. Be open and honest about your concerns. If you are having rhinoplasty to improve the appearance of your nose you should be up front with your surgeon about what your expectations are. Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a perfect nose and thus be realistic with your expectations.

Your Lake Norman facial surgeon will evaluate the structure of your nose to determine whether or not your expectations are feasible.

Rhinoplasty: What to Expect

Rhinoplasties are performed as outpatient procedures, meaning that you can expect your surgery to not warrant an overnight hospital stay. Your surgeon may use general or local anesthesia during your procedure. Under general anesthesia, you will be asleep throughout the procedure, with local anesthesia, you will be awake but sedated, numbed and unable to feel any pain.

During the procedure your surgeon will make a series of small incisions on the inside of the nose. More severe cases that involve more in depth restructuring, may require an incision at the base of the nose. Working from the inside as much as possible your surgeon will go to work chipping away at the bone and cartilage to produce a more appealing structure, or to repair defects that may be preventing your nose from functioning properly.

The Cost of Rhinoplasty

Nose surgery varies in cost depending on the severity of the situation. In most cases a nose job will cost on average around $8,000. Nose jobs that are done for medical purposes may be covered by your medical insurance. However, a nose job that is purely for cosmetic purposes will most certainly not be covered by medical insurance and thus should be considered an out-of-pocket expense.
