Platelet Rich Plasma for Accelerated Recovery
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an advanced treatment that has historically been used by athletes to speed up their recovery process from sports related injuries. Recently, PRP has begun to be used for a wider range of treatments, including addressing joint issues, facilitating regeneration of the skin, and addressing issues such as dark circles and puffiness that occurs below the eyes, as well as sagging skin around the mouth, cheeks, and eyes.
PRP is collected by drawing a small amount of blood into a sterile tube. Once this sample is collected, it is placed into a centrifuge, which then spins the sample around to isolate and concentrate the platelets, growth factors, and stem cells. This sample is then injected into the skin. When PRP is added to a wound, growth factors are released which results in an increase of tissue synthesis. These blood platelets are especially effective in facilitating the body’s natural healing process and reducing the time needed to recover from injuries, especially issues such as sprained or inflamed joints.
PRP is also frequently used for its ability to rejuvenate skin. By injecting PRP into the skin, the body naturally begins to produce more collagen, which is essential for skin revitalization. As a result of this injection, the skin becomes smoother, and wrinkles diminish.
Although PRP has not always been accepted to be an efficacious procedure in the healing process, current research supports the effectiveness of its use in facilitating the process of healing from wounds, improving skin issues that are related to aging, improving damage caused by the sun, cosmetic facial rejuvenation and other dermatological, orthopedic, reconstructive, and dental procedures. PRP has also become a popular treatment option for athletes who use PRP to help improve joint related issues.

PRP and Dermal Fillers
PRP and dermal fillers are frequently used to rejuvenate skin, reduce wrinkles, and add facial volume. Dermal fillers are typically injected to fill voids that have developed due to aging, which will temporarily improve issues such as marionette lines, nasolabial folds, thin skin in the hands, lowered eyelid bags, tear troughs, a gaunt mid-face line, hollow cheeks, or in a lip augmentation.
PRP is typically used to improve issues such as crepey skin (skin that is thin and wrinkled) and crows feet. It is also helpful in enhancing skin tone, softening eye puffiness, improving the appearance of faces that are drawn, and can also be used to seal areas of the skin that fillers cannot reach. Given the different positive impact fillers like Juvederm and PRP can have on areas of the face and the skin, it is not uncommon for the two to be used in conjunction with one another. One treatment in particular that is popular is to use a dermal filler to fill an area that has wrinkles and to use PRP to improve the overall improvement of the wrinkles in that area.
Advantages to Using PRP
In addition to speeding up the healing process and reducing your time spent recovering, there are a multitude of benefits associated with the use of PRP. One of the primary benefits of using PRP is that it is safe. Because the material comes from your own body, there is no risk of transmitting a disease. PRP is also extremely convenient and easy to handle from a surgical team perspective. The sample can be drawn and prepared right in our office. This is especially convenient when it is being administered in conjunction with a procedure that is happening that same day, which saves you multiple trips to the hospital. Finally, PRP is a cost-effective treatment option, especially when compared to the cost that would be incurred procuring a sample from a blood bank or hospital.
What Else Can PRP Help With
According to recent studies, injecting platelet-rich plasma directly into the jaw joint can result in this area becoming looser and having function restored. There is also evidence that platelet-rich plasma can be effective in improving post-traumatic scars, improving facial rejuvenation, and treating skin graft sites, surgical injuries, burns, loss of hair, bedsores, and diabetic foot ulcers.
Cost of Platelet Rich Plasma
The cost of PRP treatment and any associated procedures being performed with it will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your condition, any unique oral or health issues you have that may complicate the treatment process and what type of dental insurance plan you have. It is also important to be aware that not all insurance plans will cover the use of PRP. If your plan does cover some or all of the costs, our office will file your claim, handle the paperwork, and ensure you maximize your insurance reimbursement. The remaining balance following your insurance coverage will be your responsibility.
Prior to your procedure, we will discuss the expected cost, as well as payment plan options that are available to you, such as Lending Club and Care Credit, which offer 6 and 12 month interest-free payment plans.
For your convenience, we accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express.
