WHAT ARE ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS?

Traditional dental implants require a strong, healthy jawbone for support. For patients who have experienced significant bone loss in the upper jaw, this has previously meant months of bone grafting procedures before implants could even be considered. Zygomatic implants change that. Zygomatic implants are longer than conventional implants and anchor directly into the dense cheekbone (zygoma) rather than the upper jawbone. This allows patients with severe maxillary bone loss to receive fixed, permanent teeth—often in a single surgical visit. This removes the delays and additional procedures that come with bone grafting. At Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery, Dr. Haigney’s advanced surgical training provides the specialized expertise this technique demands. Zygomatic implant placement requires precise anatomical knowledge and surgical skill that goes beyond standard implant training. Dr. Haigney teaches this advanced surgical technique to other surgeons several times per year at the internationally renowned Pikos Institute.

THE ZYGOMATIC IMPLANT PROCESS

01
Consultation & Planning
Your journey begins with a comprehensive evaluation, including advanced 3D imaging of your facial structure. Dr. Haigney assesses your bone density, reviews your medical history, and develops a customized treatment plan. This appointment is also your opportunity to ask questions and understand what to expect.
02
Implant Placement
Zygomatic implants are placed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. The implants are anchored into the cheekbone through a precise surgical approach. In many cases, a temporary set of fixed teeth can be attached the same day.
03
Healing & Integration
Over the following months, the implants integrate with the cheekbone through osseointegration. This is the same biological process used in traditional implants. During this period, your temporary teeth allow you to eat, speak, and smile with confidence while healing progresses.
04
Final Restoration
Once integration is complete, your permanent prosthetic teeth are custom-fabricated and attached. The result is a natural-looking, fully functional set of upper teeth that are fixed in place and built to last.

CARING FOR YOUR ZYGOMATIC IMPLANTS

Oral Hygiene

Maintain your implants with brushing using a soft-bristle brush and an interdental brush.

Diet & Lifestyle

During the initial healing phase, a soft food diet is critical. Once fully healed, you can return to eating the foods you enjoy. Avoid tobacco use, which can compromise implant integration.

Regular Follow-Ups

Scheduled follow-up appointments with Dr. Haigney and your general dentist ensure your implants and prosthetics remain in optimal condition. Professional cleanings every six months help maintain long-term success.

ZYGOMATIC IMPLANT COSTS

The cost of zygomatic implant therapy varies based on the number of implants required and the complexity of your case. Because this procedure often eliminates the need for bone grafting, it can reduce both the overall timeline and total treatment cost compared to a staged approach with grafting and traditional implants. Many insurance plans provide partial coverage for implant procedures. We work with you to maximize your benefits and create an affordable payment plan. We offer convenient financing options through Cherry and CareCredit, including 6 and 12 month interest-free payment plans.

Words cannot express enough, how wonderful, caring and professional Dr. Haigney and his staff are! After being rushed to the Huntersville hospital with an orbital fracture, broken nose and other facial damage, Dr. Haigney rushed me into surgery (on his day off I must add) and corrected all my problems. I only wish all doctors cared as much about their patients and their recovery as Dr. Haigney and his staff did. Thank you so much for everything! Your attention and compassion has helped me make my recovery as comfortable as possible. 5 star service!
