Rhinoplasty (also known as a nose-job)
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that is performed to improve the function and aesthetic appearance of the nose, either by resizing or reshaping the nose. Nose surgery can be used to address a range of issues, ranging from correcting an enlarged nasal tip, straightening a nose that is or has become crooked, or addressing a lump that has formed on the bridge of the nose. These issues can develop as a result of birth defects or due to trauma. Regardless of the cause, rhinoplasty can be a very effective procedure to help patients improve their sense of self-confidence and/or improve physical issues.
At Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery, we offer a full range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, specializing in facial reconstruction, facial surgery, corrective jaw surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, and wisdom tooth removal. If you would like to learn more about our services, or schedule an appointment for rhinoplasty, contact us today. New patients are welcome and a referral from another doctor is not required.
Candidates for Rhinoplasty
Patients who meet any of the following criteria may be good candidates for a rhinoplasty:
- Asymmetrical nose due to injury
- Bulbous tip
- Bump on the bridge
- Difficulty breathing caused by irregularities with the nose structure
- Nasal tip that is enlarged, protrudes, or droops
- Nose is too small, large, or not proportionate to other facial features
- Off-center or crooked nose
- Pinched or flared nostrils
- Wide nose
Regardless of your personal issue or reason for pursuing a rhinoplasty procedure, it is important to be aware that this is a big decision and not a procedure that can be reversed. As such, it is important that you feel confident in your decision to pursue this procedure and understand the risks involved, which includes the appearance of your nose being permanently changed.
Areas Addressed with Rhinoplasty
There are a range of areas on the nose that can be enhanced through the rhinoplasty procedure, including the following:
- Nasal Bridge: The nasal bridge can be made smaller, larger, thinner, and wider and it can be straightened
- Nasal Tip: The nasal tip can be made smaller, larger, narrow, or wider and the angle can be lowered or raised.
- Nostrils: Reshaping nostrils can improve nasal breathing and improve the symmetry and proportions of the nostrils.
- Septum: Repairing and realigning a deviated septum will improve nasal breathing.
Rhinoplasty Process
Prior to beginning your procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled professionals, during which we will discuss what issues you would like to address as well as your medical history. Following this conversation, an evaluation will be performed to determine what options are available to you given the structure of your nose and what your specific goals are for this procedure.
If it is determined that you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty, a follow up appointment will be made. Rhinoplasties do not require an overnight stay in the hospital, but your surgeon will likely recommend the use of a local or general anesthesia. If you are given a local anesthesia, you will be awake for the surgery, but will not experience pain. If you are given a general anesthesia, you will be asleep while the procedure takes place and will not remember any of the process.
Once you are properly sedated, your surgeon will make small incisions inside the nose. If you required in depth restructuring, it may be necessary to make an incision at the nose’s base. Once these incisions have been made, your surgeon will begin to chip away at the cartilage and bone in order to repair defects or reach the desired aesthetic appearance.
Post Operative Care
Following your surgery, you will need to allow for several days to commit to the recovery process. During this recovery period, patients will typically need to wear a nasal splint. You will also need to apply cold compresses to reduce swelling and bruising and keep your head elevated. You should expect to have a swollen face, sore nose, and black eyes for the first few days following your surgery. Bruising typically improves within the first week and swelling will generally improve over the next two or three weeks. To ensure your nose maintains its new shape, it may be necessary to wear a nose splint for the first few days after your surgery.
A follow up appointment will typically be scheduled within the first week of your procedure to monitor your recovery and to remove stitches.
Patients are typically able to return to work within 4-5 days following surgery.
Cost of Rhinoplasty
The average cost of a rhinoplasty is around $8,000 but the cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your condition, any unique health issues you have that may complicate the procedure, and what type of insurance plan you have. Typically nose jobs that are performed for medical reasons will be covered by insurance, whereas nose jobs that are performed for cosmetic reasons may only be partially covered or not covered at all. Our office will file your claim, handle the paperwork, and ensure you maximize your insurance reimbursement. The remaining balance following your insurance coverage will be your responsibility.
Prior to performing the procedure, we will discuss the expected cost, as well as payment plan options that are available to you, such as Lending Club and Care Credit, which offer 6 and 12 month interest-free payment plans.
For your convenience, we accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express.
