Chin Implant (also known as genioplasty)
A chin implant (genioplasty) is a cosmetic procedure that is performed for patients who are dissatisfied with the aesthetic appearance of their chin. This dissatisfaction can be for a variety of reasons, such as the chin not being in balance with other facial features or not being as defined as they would like. For patients who are struggling with these frustrations, a chin implant may be an effective solution for achieving the look you need to feel good about your appearance and have more self-confidence.
Although commonly used for cosmetic reasons, a chin implant can also be performed to address a severe facial injury. Regardless of your reason for wanting to pursue a chin implant, our office is qualified to perform an examination of your facial structure and help you determine what options are available to you to help you achieve your personal goals and resolve any issues you might be struggling with.
At Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery, we offer a full range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, specializing in facial reconstruction, facial surgery, corrective jaw surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, and wisdom tooth removal. If you would like to learn more about our services, or schedule an appointment for a chin implant, contact us today. New patients are welcome and a referral from another doctor is not required.
Chin Implant Procedure
Prior to beginning your procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled professionals, during which we will discuss what issues you would like to address. Following this conversation, an evaluation will be performed to determine what options are available to you and which approach best aligns with your specific goals.
If it is determined that you are a good candidate for a chin implant, the next step will be determining what type of implant is right for you. Although our office has a wide range of implant shapes available, the two most common type of implants used are squared implants and anatomical implants, which are more rounded. During this initial consultation, we will be happy to explain the differences between these two types of implants and will be happy to offer our opinion about what we feel is your best option, but we ultimately are committed to helping you decide on an implant shape that you will be most happy with.
Once this has been decided, the procedure will be scheduled. The procedure is typically outpatient and performed with a local and general anesthetic. Once these have been administered, your dentist will make a tiny incision inside the mouth or beneath the chin. One of the benefits to making the incision within the mouth is that there will be no visible scarring; however, this approach also increases the likelihood of an infection developing.
Once the incision has been made, space will be made for the implant, which is then inserted and properly placed around the chin bone. Following this placement, your surgeon will examine the placement to ensure that it is properly balanced with the surrounding facial features. If necessary, minor modifications or adjustments to the implant will be made until the desired result is reached.
After the implant is properly placed, the incision will be sutured shut and bandages will be placed over the chin. If the sutures are made in the mouth, they will dissolve within ten days. Sutures that are made outside of the mouth are typically removed with ten days as well.
This procedure can typically be performed in under one hour, unless this procedure is being performed in conjunction with other procedures, in which case the time spent in surgery will vary.
Benefits of a Chin Implant
There are a range of immediate and long-term benefits that you will enjoy following your chin implant, including the following:
- Corrects a recessed or weak chin
- Improving the proportion of the chin to other facial features will improve the overall harmony of the face
- Improved definition of the jawline and neck
- Reduces the double chin appearance
Chin Implant Risks
As with any procedure of this type, there are risks involved, though this procedure is typically very safe. Possible issues that can develop following a chin implant include scarring, side effects from the anesthesia, internal bleeding, the implant shifting, or an infection developing.
While these risks are unlikely, it is important to talk with your dentist and make sure you understand the risks involved prior to having this procedure performed.
Procedure Recovery
Following your chin lift, it is important to schedule at least three to five days of downtime when you will not go to work and rest as much as possible. In addition to taking this time off, it will be critical to avoid contact sports and anything physical exertion for at least eight weeks while your implant has time to heal.
Cost of Chin Implant
The cost of your procedure will be determined by a variety of factors, such as the severity of your condition, any unique health issues you have that may complicate the procedure, and what type of insurance plan you have. Our office will file your claim, handle the paperwork, and ensure you maximize your insurance reimbursement. The remaining balance following your insurance coverage will be your responsibility.
Prior to performing the procedure, we will discuss the expected cost, as well as payment plan options that are available to you, such as Lending Club and Care Credit, which offer 6 and 12 month interest-free payment plans.
For your convenience, we accept MasterCard, Visa, Discover, and American Express.
