Neck Lift (Lower Rhytidectomy or Cervicoplasty)
A neck lift is a cosmetic procedure that is commonly performed to improve the aesthetic appearance of areas of the neck that have begun to show signs of aging. Commonly called a “turkey neck”, the neck lift procedure (cervicoplasty) will restore the neck to its former appearance through the use of liposuction and the tightening of the neck muscles.
Neck lift surgery is typically performed to address the following issues:
- Abnormal contours that are formed due to muscle banding in the neck
- Excess fatty deposits that has developed under the chin
- Jowls in the lower face caused by skin relaxation and excess skin
- Loose neck skin
These issues can develop for a variety of reasons, including stress, environmental conditions, hereditary predisposition, or general aging. A neck lift can be an ideal solution for individuals who are struggling with feelings of self-consciousness, as well as patients who do not require a facelift, but do have jowl lines, a double chin, and/or neck skin wrinkling.
At Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery, we offer a full range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, specializing in facial reconstruction, facial surgery, corrective jaw surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, and wisdom tooth removal. If you would like to learn more about our services, or schedule an appointment for neck lift, contact us today. New patients are welcome and a referral from another doctor is not required.
The Neck Lift Process
Prior to beginning your neck lift procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled professionals, during which we will discuss what issues you would like to address as well as your medical history. Following this conversation, an evaluation will be performed to determine what options are available to you, and which approach best aligns with your specific goals.
If it is determined that you are a good candidate for a neck lift, your surgeon will take photographs of your neck, which will be used to compare your neck before and after surgery, and you will be provided with instructions for what you will need to do prior to having surgery.
On the day the procedure is performed, you will be provided with an anesthetic to minimize or eliminate any pain or discomfort you may feel. Once you are properly numbed, a small incision will be made beneath your chin. Excess fat will then be removed through this incision using liposuction, and the neck muscle will be tightened. Once properly tightened, the tissue will be repositioned and the incision will be closed.
Neck Lift Recovery Process
Following your neck lift procedure, you will be provided with post-operative instructions for taking precautions and caring for the site. It is important to closely follow these instructions to ensure that you heal properly and as quickly as possible.
You should expect to experience some swelling and pain, but this can typically be managed with rest and prescription pain medication. It is also important to avoiding twisting or bending your head, and to keep your head elevated in order to prevent swelling from occurring. It is also important to not use ice on the area, as doing so can cause blood flow to become restricted. If you follow these guidelines, the swelling should improve and disappear within a few weeks and the incision should be healed within six months.
Neck Lift Candidates
To be considered a good candidate for neck lift surgery, patients must meet the following qualifications:
- Currently have neck related issues, such as loss of definition between the neck and jaw, sagging skin, or excessive neck fat
- Be in good health and free of any conditions or illnesses that could compromise the procedure and/or your ability to heal
- Either stop smoking or avoid smoking during the healing process
- Understand the risks involved and have realistic expectations concerning the results
Non-Surgical Options
There are several non-surgical treatment options available for patients who want to improve the aesthetic appearance of their neck but would prefer to avoid a surgical procedure. These non-surgical treatment options can also be performed prior to do, during, or following a neck lift or surgical facelift to help complement the surgical results. These non-surgical options include dermal filler treatments, dermabrasion, and BOTOX injections, all of which assist in giving the face a fresher, younger, healthier look and will reduce imperfections, wrinkles, and fine lines.
Benefits of a Neck Lift
There are a range of immediate and long-term benefits that you will enjoy following your neck lift, including the following:
- Creates an appearance of being younger
- A tightened neck
- Removal of jowls and improved definition the jaw and chin
- No additional cosmetic surgeries required, which is ideal for patients whose issues with aging are occurring in the neck and not the face
