Juvederm for a Refreshed Appearance
Juvederm is a popular injectable dermal filler that is used to smooth and fill smile and laugh lines that can form around the mouth and nose, causing an individual to look older. Patients who use Juvederm do so because they want a younger, more refreshed appearance.
Juvedermm is one of the safest and most effective ways to improve these lines and wrinkles and counteract the natural loss of collagen that occurs over time. Part of the reason Juvaderm is so effective is because it contains hyaluronic acid (HA). HA is a molecule that naturally occurs in the skin, but begins to decline as we age. When this happens, our skin’s ability to retain moisture becomes diminished. By replenishing the bodies supply of HA, the areas where wrinkles have developed become more hydrated, which returns a full and firm appearance.
Juvederm is also commonly used for lip augmentation as well as in conjunction with injectables such as BOTOX, which is especially effective in softening frown lines and crow’s feet.
At Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery, we offer a full range of oral and maxillofacial surgical procedures, specializing in facial reconstruction, facial surgery, corrective jaw surgery, obstructive sleep apnea, and wisdom tooth removal. Types of Juvederm
The three primary types of Juvederm are:
- Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Volbella XC: A nonsurgical lip enhancement treatment
- Juvederm Voluma XC: This type is effective in increase the size of your cheeks by adding volume beneath your skin’s surface
- Juvederm XC and Juvederm Vollure XC: This type is effective in filling smile lines and addressing loss of skin elasticity
The Juvederm Process
Prior to beginning your procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with one of our skilled professionals, during which we will discuss what issues you would like to address. Following this conversation, an evaluation will be performed to determine what options are available to you and which approach best aligns with your specific goals.
If it is determined that Juvederm is the best approach for you, we will examine your facial muscle and skin tone. Although Juvederm has lidocaine, which will help minimize any discomfort that will be felt when administered, topical creams may also be applied to the sites of the injections.
The Juvederm will be injected into the dermis using a fine needle and cannula. By injecting in this site, the wrinkles that have formed will receive more volume. The cannula technique is used because it has a lower chance of injuring the vessel and causing bruising.
This entire process will take approximately 15 minutes. Once it is complete, you will be able to enjoy the results immediately. Before completing the procedure, we will discuss post-operative care instructions, which includes refraining from consuming alcohol, strenuous exercise, and sun exposure for at least 24 hours. You will also be given care instructions for any bruising, swelling, or tenderness that occurs, but fortunately these symptoms will typically fade after a few days.
Juvederm FAQ
Am I a good candidate for JUVEDERM?
Juvederm is safe for most patients, provided they are in good health, have a strong desire to address the wrinkles and lines around their mouth and nose, and have a realistic expectation for how much the procedure will improve your overall appearance.
How long do results last?
One treatment session will generally result in a significant improvement that will last anywhere from six months to two years, depending upon which type of Juvederm product was used. It is important to be aware that every patient will have a slightly different experience, with some patients having longer results and others requiring ongoing touch-ups. Results of treatment are practically instantaneous.
Does JUVEDERM work on different skin tones?
JUVÉDERM is the first hyaluronic acid injectable filler that is effective and safe for persons of color, with zero evidence of hyperpigmentation or scarring when applied to darker skin tones.
Associated Risks
Following your Juvederm treatment, it is common to experiencing itching, bruising, swelling, tenderness and redness where the injection occurred. These side effects are typically mild and will quickly subside. As with any procedure, however, there are additional risks involved, including the possibility of an infection developing, but this is very uncommon.
If Juvederm is not properly administered, there are potentially serious side effects, such as permanent scarring, blindness, vision issues, and/or a stroke. For these reasons, it is critical to have this procedure performed by a certified, trained, and licensed professional.
Following your Juvederm treatment, it will be important to avoid consuming alcohol, wearing makeup, strenuous activity, and avoid prolonged exposure from the sun for at least 24 hours.
