How Much Tooth Extractions Cost

Having a tooth extracted is a rather simple procedure. Most of the time, an extraction can be done in under 45 minutes as an outpatient procedure. An Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon or a Periodontist is typically who you would see for an extraction.

A person can require a tooth extraction for any number of reasons. Wisdom teeth probably come to mind as they are the most common extraction. Other reasons include impacted teeth, which means that the tooth never erupted through the bone or gum tissue, a fractured tooth, or a tooth that has such extensive decay it has been deemed hopeless.

How much does it cost to have a tooth extracted?

One factor that plays a role in the overall cost of having a tooth extracted is the location of the tooth. Anterior teeth, those teeth in the front, are usually a quick and simple extraction and therefore cost less than the molars in the back of the mouth.

Another issue is whether or not the tooth is impacted. If the tooth is impacted under the gum tissue, it requires a little more effort and may cost a little more than if it had erupted through the gum. You can also have a tooth that never erupted through the jaw bone and that is an even more expensive and extensive surgery.

The typical price range is about $75-$200 per tooth. If your extraction requires any kind of general anesthesia, such as an impacted tooth, your cost could be significantly more. Most of the time, extractions can be performed using a simple local anesthetic.

Financial Arrangements

Some offices offer in-house or third-party financing that can help ease the burden of your out-of-pocket cost. If you have dental insurance, that may cover some of the costs. You might also consider looking into your medical insurance to see if any portion of your extraction procedure might be covered through that.

What are the benefits of having teeth extracted?

Dentists and oral surgeons preferred for their patients to keep as many of their natural teeth as possible. If your dentist has advised you to have a tooth extracted, that is because the tooth has been deemed hopeless and cannot be restored to a healthy state.

It is important to follow through with extractions if you have been advised to do so. Decay spreads when left untreated so if there is something affecting a tooth that cannot be treated with traditional restorative procedures, it is best for the overall health of your mouth to have the tooth extracted. Severe decay can cause gum recession and even lead to jaw bone deterioration and the loss of healthy teeth.

You also may be advised to have a tooth or two extracted if you are considering orthodontic treatment. It is not uncommon at all for patients to require the removal of wisdom teeth before undergoing orthodontia.

While treatment is important, it is important to be prepared financially and to know what you are up against. If you need a tooth extracted and plan on having that tooth replaced, speak with your dentist about restorative procedures so that you understand and are prepared for the long-haul financially.
