Types of Permanent Dentures at Lake Norman Oral & Facial Surgery

Permanent dentures are an alternative to traditional dentures for‌ replacing several missing teeth․ They‌ are much more stable than the removable dentures‚ as they are supported by dental implants․ They can improve both function and aesthetics‚ and are designed to remain in place during routine activities‚ such as eating or talking․ There are different types of permanent dentures available that your dentist may recommend to you‚ depending‌ on the condition of your mouth‚ how many teeth you have lost‚ and your personal goals․

A‌ common fixed restoration is a full arch denture‚ which is a prosthetic device that replaces an entire upper or lower arch of teeth‚ and is permanently fixed to a number of dental implants․ Once‌ the prosthetic is in place, it is permanently fixed in your mouth․ You‌ do not remove the bridge to clean it‚ but brush and floss around the implants and have it checked at regular dental visits․ Many people prefer this solution as it is very stable‚‌ feels more natural‚ and causes fewer problems and complications than removable dentures․

Another variation of this procedure is the implant-supported overdenture‚ a type of denture which is supported by dental implants‚ that can be removed if needed․ The denture is held in place by special attachments that‌ connect it to the implants so that the prosthesis does not move during chewing or speaking․ This option may be offered if you require something more stable than conventional dentures‚ but would like to be able to‌ remove the prosthesis at home․

Some patients may be eligible for same-day implants and‌ dentures․ In some cases‚ implants and a‌ temporary fixed denture can be placed at the same time as the extractions․ This allows the patient‌ to leave the office with functional teeth․ Once the healing‌ period is over‚ the temporary can be replaced with a custom-made permanent denture for the long term․ Not everybody is a candidate for this treatment‚ but‚ it‌ is an excellent treatment option if you are healthy enough for it․

Permanent dentures are also made from different materials․ Some are made using hard acrylic teeth and denture base material of high quality; others are made from porcelain or other high-quality ceramic-like materials‚ similar to tooth enamel․ Your dentist will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each based on their durability‚ appearance‚ care‚ and your needs․

The number of implants used to support the denture can also vary․ Full-arch restorations can be made to work on as few as four implants placed in optimal positions․ Others may require five‚ six, or more‚ depending on the bone structure and the extent of the treatment․ Your dentist will examine your jawbone and bite to determine which type of implant design is best suited for you․

The most suitable permanent denture will vary for each patient according to their general oral health and condition of the supporting bones‚ as well as their habits and goals for the treatment in the long-term․

If you have more questions about permanent dentures or how they could affect your dental health, make an appointment with the dentist to see if permanent dentures are the best treatment plan for you.
